West Midlands regional manager
Pete Shorrick
What do you do?
My main priorities include: raising awareness of diabetes to both the general public and healthcare professionals. Working with Primary Care Trusts towards improving diabetes care and trying to ensure diabetes is considered a priority in the NHS.
What is it like to work for Diabetes UK?
Diabetes UK is the best organisation I have ever worked for. This is mainly due to the nature of the cause, the friendly culture of the organisation and the fact that staff are encouraged to be creative.
My role is diverse, which means I never get bored, and in working towards improving diabetes care I meet and work alongside so many interesting people with diabetes and healthcare professionals.
Where did you come from, when and why did you join Diabetes UK?
I was General Manager of Staffordshire Crossroads, a Charity
providing respite care for carers. Prior to that I was a Building Society Manager for National & Provincial Building Society. In 1998 I joined Diabetes UK (then British Diabetic Association), and looked forward to the challenge of helping to improve diabetes care across the West Midlands.
What benefits are there that come from working at Diabetes UK?
As well as complete job satisfaction, Diabetes UK offers a competitive salary, pension facility, life assurance and a generous holiday allowance.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Making a difference and the diversity of my role. In the morning I could be giving a radio interview, in the afternoon I could be delivering a presentation to 50 practice nurses, and then in the evening chairing a public meeting.
What values do you feel are important in order to work at Diabetes UK?
Integrity, dedication, and commitment towards improving diabetes care. Most importantly having a sense of humour!
