New Health TV series competition
26 June 2009
Diabetes UK is inviting people to participate in a monthly competition on the Simply Health television series for the chance to win a hamper of recipe books, goodies and diabetes information.
Simply Health follows the lives of six South Asian people and offers diet and healthy lifestyle advice. It is jointly sponsored by Diabetes UK, the cholesterol charity HEART UK and the Food Standard Agency (FSA). It airs on the satellite channel Sony TV Asia every Sunday at 11.30am.
Revamp traditional recipes
The competition asks viewers to incorporate the advice and simple tips from the show to make their traditional food healthier. All winning recipes will be put on the Diabetes UK website in the Diabetes lifestyle section.
Jenne Dixit, Equality and Diversity Manager at Diabetes UK, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring Simply Health. The competition is a great way for viewers to try out new, healthier recipes as well as have some fun in the kitchen!
“It is imperative that we reach out to the South Asian community and communicate how serious Type 2 diabetes is especially as people of South Asian origin are up to six times more likely to have the condition than the general population.”
Good nutrition and healthy lifestyle
During its 30 episodes, Simply Health aims to teach and inform South Asian viewers about good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, particularly in relation to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The programme has cooking demonstrations, offers practical tips on healthy South Asian dishes and dispels commonly held myths.
Celebrity chef Cyrus Todiwala looks at how traditional South Asian cuisine can be made healthier and other celebrity chefs such as Manju Mahli make guest appearances on the show. The cricketer Mark Ramprakash and beauty therapist Bharti Vyas are also set to feature.
