Nutritional guidelines in diabetes care

 

These guidelines have been compiled by Diabetes UK’s Nutrition Subcommittee of the Diabetes Care Advisory Committee.

The overall aim of the advice is to help people with diabetes to maintain or improve their health through the use of appropriate and healthy food choices. The advice given to people with diabetes must take account of personal and cultural preferences, lifestyle and the individual’s wishes and willingness to change.

Areas covered in the guidelines are:

  • aims and goals of nutritional advice
  • weight management
  • physical activity and exercise
  • composition of the diet and how to translate the theory into practice
  • special groups including, children and adolescents, elderly people, people from ethnic minorities, eating disorders and diabetes and pregnancy
  • dietary management of various medical conditions and diabetes including hypertension and coeliac disease
  • need for increased dietetic service provision throughout the UK.
