Prioritising emotional well being (Nov 2007)

Diabetes UK is calling for:

  • The provision of emotional and psychological support as an integral part of a 
    diabetes care package as a matter of priority
  • Individuals’ emotional and psychological needs to be properly assessed in partnership with the individual, as part of a care planning process
  • Structured education programmes to formally incorporate an emotional well being component
  • Government to invest in talking therapies and provide the resources to enable the training and ongoing support and supervision of healthcare professionals to deliver emotional and psychological support with the aim of embedding this as an integral part of healthcare professional training
  • Training to be accredited and quality assured
  • Resources to enable mental health support services to meet the demand being identified
  • Trusts and Boards to gather intelligence on local sources of support such as voluntary groups, support groups and related charities and disseminate to healthcare practitioners in the locality
  • Further research and recommendations supporting the training of healthcare professionals to deliver emotional and psychological support.
