Preventing Type 2 diabetes

Seven million people in the UK are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

We’re working hard to help stem the rising tide of diabetes by raising awareness of the risk factors associated with developing the condition, and by encouraging people to eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight and take part in regular physical activity.

Healthy Lifestyle Roadshows

We promote these messages to at our Healthy Lifestyle Roadshows where our teams visit high streets and workplaces across the UK. We offer advice on healthy eating, losing weight and getting active. We also offer a free diabetes risk assessment, and refer people to their doctor if they show a moderate to high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

In 2012 we held 95 roadshows, carrying out 21,000 risk assessments and referring 11,000 people to their GPs. In addition, over 60,000 people took our online risk assessment.

Community Champions

We also train Diabetes Community Champions in areas with large Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities who are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. And we’re working with a growing number of corporate partners, including Bupa and Boots, to help raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes.
