Cell science to self-care: getting it right
Dear colleagues
As Chair of the Conference Organising Committee, my colleagues in the Committee and Conference team and I would be delighted to welcome you to the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2014 as we return to ACC Liverpool.
2014 programme highlights
An exciting programme for the 2014 Conference has been developed addressing the demands of diabetes from basic science, through clinical care and psychosocial aspects of diabetes. Perhaps now more than ever, the increasing prevalence and burgeoning personal and public health burden of diabetes reflect the need for renewed vigour as we strive to provide the best outcomes for people living with diabetes.
The plenary sessions will focus on paediatric provision, basic science and the clinical aspects of diabetes. Supporting people with diabetes in secure environments will also feature, alongside sessions on the impact of diabetes on family members. There will be a strong focus on technologies and their application, covering the latest closed loop research and making the best use of insulin pumps and CGMS. In addition, the prestigious Named Lectures will be delivered by leading experts.
Basic science will continue to have a major presence over the first two days and, following feedback from the 2013 Conference, we have also included a number of sessions linked to paediatric care on Thursday and a dedicated workshop track across all three days.
Other planned sessions include pregnancy, podiatry, complications of diabetes, diabetes and distress, whole organ transplantation, and obesity.

Abstract submission
The Conference promises to be exciting and informative but the quality of the programme is also dependent on the strength of new research across all areas of diabetes, which comes from your submitted abstracts. I would encourage you to make a note of the abstract submission deadline of 5pm, Wednesday 2 October 2013, and invite you to submit your papers.
On behalf of my Vice Chair, David Chaney, and the Conference team, I look forward to welcoming you to an innovative 2014 Conference.
Best wishes
Katharine Barnard
