Aims

The objectives are to assist HCPs to:

  • Engage in the emotional content of a consultation
  • Effectively ask the questions that may open a 'can of worms'
  • Improve perception of the patient's condition in the context of their lives
  • Increase awareness of the barriers to effective communication in consultations.

Length structure

Two one-day workshops (9am to 5pm approximately), one month apart.

Type of study

Attendance on both days of the course.

Entry criteria

The course focuses on skills and although the scenarios and examples used relate to people with diabetes, the course is suitable for any healthcare professional who engages with patients.

How achievement is assessed

Completion of both days of the course results in a Royal College of Nursing certificate of 12 study hours.

Teaching methods

A variety of teaching methods are used including role plays, small group work, presentations and discussion.

Additional comments

Dealing with the challenges faced by people with diabetes can be difficult. Healthcare professionals must often address sensitive and personal issues as well as physical symptoms.

This Royal College of Nursing accredited course was successfully run in 2008 (then called Overcoming Barriers to Diabetes Care) with the intention of assisting healthcare professionals to raise and respond to emotional and sensitive issues - or opening and managing a 'can of worms'.

This Diabetes UK training course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the skills and resources to manage patients' personal and psychological wellbeing.

The course is interactive and involves a variety of teaching methods. The objectives are to assist HCPs to:

  • Engage in the emotional content of a consultation
  • Effectively ask the questions that may open a 'can of worms'
  • Improve perception of the patient's condition in the context of their lives
  • Increase awareness of the barriers to effective communication in consultations.
