There are over 25,000 children and young people in the UK who are living with diabetes. On average a child will have to give themselves 95,000 insulin injections during their lifetime. A diagnosis is traumatic for any child and their family and often the condition is only diagnosed in children after they have developed ketoasidosis and fell in to a coma.
Diabetes UK works to improve the lives of children with diabetes. With your help we strive to support children with diabetes, their parents and families to enable them to self manage their diabetes and lead a full and healthy life.
Denim for diabetes is a fun and simple way for schools to raise money for a good cause. For a small donation pupils (and staff) can leave their uniforms at home and come to school in denim or other favourite clothes.
Add a little something
Maybe your school would like to make the day extra special? As well as wearing your denim for the day you could have fun, and raise additional funds through other activities.
Ideas ...
Here are some denim-tastic ideas to start you off:
- Competition – who can wear the most denim items?
- Decorate your denim – whose is the most eye-catching?
- Guess the weight of the jeans.
- Denim fashion show.
- Denim art – use some denim to make collages or why not get everyone to make a denim for diabetes self-portrait?
- See how many words can you make from ‘Denim for diabetes’.
- Theme your Denim for Diabetes day – what about the Wild West, 60s hippy, or rock star style?
- Karaoke – everyone dresses as their favourite rock or pop star for a denim karaoke competition.
- Denim disco.
- Denim gifts to sell – use denim to cover items such as notebooks, picture frames and diaries.
- Denim bake sale – eg denim dressed gingerbread men.
- Denim cake auction – make a cake in the shape of a pair of jeans.
- Sponsored walk, or run.
- Sponsored silence – give your teachers some peace and quiet.
