Now in its fourth year, the swim will take place on Sunday 22 September. Entry is free, but each swimmer should aim to raise £150+ in sponsorship.
Famously deep and clear, Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid in Welsh) abounds in legend and mystery. It has links to Arthurian legend and the Welsh princes and even has its own monster myth – ‘Tegi’ is said to be seen swimming in its depths on moonlit nights.
The course is one mile in length and safety boats will be on hand to support the swimmers. The challenge is rapidly becoming a magnet for wild swimmers who like to swim in some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK.
“No-one should attempt this swim without a wetsuit and appropriate training,” says Andy Brazier, one of the organisers. “You should be able to confidently swim at least 64 lengths before attempting it, so now is the time to get down to the leisure centre and build up your stamina!”
Lake Bala is in Snowdonia, so swimmers can expect a chilly plunge, even in September. You have to be over 15 to enter.
Many people get their sponsorship online by using websites like JustGiving or Diabetes Challenge. These sites are simple to use and make it easy for your supporters to stay in touch and pay up when the time comes.
