Campaign success stories

Retinal screening successes

Diabetes UK has been urging people to contact their local PCT to make sure that they are providing high quality, annual retinal screening for people with diabetes for a number of years now and will continue to do so until it is available to everyone who needs it.

Despite the outlook being bleak in the PCTs of Western Cheshire and North Yorkshire and York, this didn’t stop determined campaigners, DCN and voluntary group members among them, from keeping the pressure on.

Although initially told that retinal screening with a digital camera was not possible for financial reasons local campaigners did not give up and both PCTs now have retinal screening services up and running.

Local campaign leads to appointment of schools disability director

In South Warwickshire local campaigners helped secure the appointment of a schools director covering disability equality in Warwickshire which covers all aspects of Diabetes UK’s Living with diabetes in schools campaign.

Local campaigners took part in the campaign writing to the Local Education Authority (LEA) about their concerns that all schools should have a policy in place for supporting children with long term conditions.

As well as highlighting the needs of children with diabetes in school, this campaign has also helped foster a positive relationship between local campaigners and the LEA, ensuring that diabetes in schools will not be forgotten.
