Medical research funding
Diabetes UK is one of the largest funders of diabetes research in the UK, with funds for 2008 exceeding £7 million. Unfortunately this covers just a fraction of the amount required for all the important projects we would like to fund.
Scientists agree that research will lead to a cure for diabetes and recent breakthroughs suggest we may now be closer to a cure than we previously imagined. Diabetes research takes year after year of tireless, dedicated study, but if scientists are to achieve long-term goals, they must have long-term funding.
Examples of the main areas of recent research funding grants are:
- control of diabetes
- secretion and action of insulin
- prevention and treatment of complications
- causes of diabetes
- genetics of diabetes.
"Diabetes is projected to become one of the world's main disablers and killers within the next twenty-five years. Immediate action is needed to stem the tide of diabetes."
