Specsavers opticians case study

Diabetes UK were delighted to work with Specsavers opticians throughout 2007 in a partnership that delivered beyond fundraising.
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the UK’s working age population and people with diabetes are almost twice as likely to develop eye conditions like glaucoma. To tackle these shocking statistics, Diabetes UK and Specsavers supported each other with mutually beneficial fundraising and media activities. These ranged from a high profile launch fronted by Sir Steve Redgrave and the star-studded Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards, to real-life stories in the national press and staff skydiving in aid of Diabetes UK.

The original fundraising target was smashed thanks to Specsavers staff and customers’ exceptional efforts. They raised an amazing £150,000 and highlighted important issues around retinopathy, eye care and digital retinal screening amongst people with diabetes, those at risk of developing it and the general public.
“Specsavers is delighted to support Diabetes UK in raising awareness of diabetes and retinopathy. Last year, Specsavers raised more than £150,000 to fund research and help make a positive impact to the lives of people living with diabetes - this result is testament to the successful partnership between Specsavers and Diabetes UK," said Dame Mary Perkins, Specsavers Founder.
Thanks to last year’s success, Specsavers and Diabetes UK are working together again to reinforce the messages behind the partnership with a range of fundraising and awareness activities throughout 2008.
Throughout June, Specsavers donated up to £1 from every eye examination to Diabetes UK. They are also supporting Diabetes UK’s new pin badge appeal featuring the cartoon character Dangermouse.
In addition, many stores are holding fundraising days which include taking part in activities such as tea parties as well as brave individuals skydiving; all to raise funds for Diabetes UK. The money raised will fund local projects to support people with diabetes and go towards our vital research programme.
