Take action to support the Diabetes UK Cymru foot campaign

In Wales last year, it was a great concern to learn that over three hundred people with diabetes experienced an amputation. What is more worrying is that research suggests that up to 80% of these amputations were potentially preventable.

Half of people with diabetes recently surveyed by the charity didn’t realise that having diabetes puts them at an increased risk of amputation. Nearly one in five had not had an essential annual foot check to make sure that there were no problems with their feet.

The Chief Medical Advisor to the Minister for Health and NHS Wales have acknowledged that more work needs to be done to raise awareness and improve foot support services for people with diabetes. With your help, we will make sure that the Government and NHS Wales follows words with action.

Diabetes UK Cymru would like to know about your local foot care services. Is your local foot care service providing the support it should? What is happening in your area? Contact wales@diabetes.org.uk to help us improve services in your area.
