Diabetes Week: Be part of the story. 9-15 June 2013

About our research

Our research story began more than 75 years ago when world-famous novelist HG Wells and Dr RD Lawrence founded the Diabetic Association, now known as Diabetes UK.

In 1935, they awarded our first research grant of £50 to Dr Hans Kosterlitz – and four years later he’d made a major contribution to science by revealing a key step in how the liver produces glucose.

There have been many more breakthroughs along the way, and today we constantly look for the causes of diabetes, new ways to prevent it, how to improve care and treatment and ultimately find a cure.

That’s why we have around £20 million invested in more than 100 pioneering diabetes research projects, making us one of the largest funders of diabetes research in the UK. We support diabetes research in many different ways, giving money to researchers looking at all types of diabetes and diabetes-related complications.

Thanks to the donations of people like you, we’re able to invest money that funds everything from PhD studentships to nurture a new generation of diabetes experts, fellowships for scientists and clinicians, to project and equipment grants that support cutting-edge science.

With your help we can do even more.
