Organising events

Why have an event?

Organisations often hold events without being clear or honest about their reasons. It seems like a good idea at the time – one of the management committee knows a string quartet, brass band or a nearly famous person, or someone has offered a venue if you can do something with it.

Is it to:

  • raise money?
  • raise awareness?
  • create publicity?
  • use celebrities?
  • reward volunteers/ supporters
  • have fun?

What are the pitfalls?

Events can:

  • be very time-consuming
  • lose money if not properly planned
  • be very labour-intensive
  • be disruptive to the other activities of the organisation
  • involve liability
  • 'flop' in front of a large audience.
