Organisations often hold events without being clear or honest about their reasons. It seems like a good idea at the time – one of the management committee knows a string quartet, brass band or a nearly famous person, or someone has offered a venue if you can do something with it.
Is it to:
- raise money?
- raise awareness?
- create publicity?
- use celebrities?
- reward volunteers/ supporters
- have fun?
What are the pitfalls?
Events can:
- be very time-consuming
- lose money if not properly planned
- be very labour-intensive
- be disruptive to the other activities of the organisation
- involve liability
- 'flop' in front of a large audience.
