Sample Great North Run training plan and tips - week one

Welcome to week one of your training plan

During your weekly training plan we will focus on helping you reach your fundraising target by providing hints and tips, while also providing advice on how to reach that fitness level required to complete the half marathon.

The key to successful training is to build gradually. Everyone progresses at a different rate and your body takes time to adapt to the new demands that you make on it. Hence, it is important not to allow your enthusiasm to override the components of a correctly structured training plan and to always allow sufficient rest and recovery between sessions.

We will be sending out training plans for the next 15 weeks via email, if at any point you do not receive your email please contact us.

Fundraising advice

Welcome to the first edition of the fundraising advice section, we have created this to try and help ensure you reach your fundraising target. This week is more of an introduction and will cover some of the basics for those people who are completely new to fundraising and will build week on week into a mini guide.

For our Charity Places we ask that our runners raise a minimum of £350 in sponsorship. Over the 16 weeks that you will be receiving your training plans, this works out at just £22 a week. But you don't have to stop at £350, raising more helps us to fund more research, allows us to fund support services such as ‘Careline’ and allows us to fund more care events such as children’s support holidays.

Firstly, now that you have your sponsorship form, you can begin to collect donations from your friends and family. It is always worth keeping your sponsorship form on you at all times just in case as you never know when you might run into a potential sponsor! If at any point you require additional sponsor forms, please contact the Northern & Yorkshire office on 01325 488606 or northyorks@diabetes.org.uk and we will send these out to you.

Gift Aid

On the sponsorship forms and on the online donations, your supporters will be asked if they would like to Gift Aid their donation. Please ensure that as many people as possible tick the Gift Aid box plus give their full name and address (postcodes are essential) as it allows us to claim an extra 25p for every pound raised. It doesn’t cost your supporters any extra to Gift Aid their donation.
