GDA labelling

Diabetes UK strongly supports the use of traffic light labelling as it is clearer and easier for people to understand. However, not all manufacturers use this system so you may see a Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) label on some of the foods you buy.

GDA label

The above label provides information on the grams of sugar, fat, saturated fat and salt as well as the number of calories in each portion of the product and the percentages refer to the proportion of the total amount (of calories/ sugar/ fat/ salt) that it is recommended an average adult consume in a day. The percentage guideline daily amount is not a target, for calories it is an average requirement and for the other nutrients it is a maximum.

This system requires a greater level of interpretation than the traffic light system. Diabetes UK will, therefore, continue to campaign for all manufacturers to adopt the traffic light system.
