Contraceptive pill and diabetes

Some people are concerned that having diabetes means they are unable to take the contraceptive pill or that it will affect their diabetes control.

The risks associated with taking the oral contraceptive pill are the same for women with diabetes as those without diabetes, although some women do experience a slight deterioration in control when they first start using this method of contraception. This can be easily monitored and controlled by a slight change in their regime.

A GP or family planning clinic will ensure that the contraceptive pill is an appropriate treatment for any woman regardless of whether they have diabetes or not.
The Family Planning Association produces a vast amount of literature on the different contraceptive methods and your daughter may wish to contact them for further information. Telephone: 020 7608 5240 or visit their website.
