Don't leave it too late

Diabetes - A guide for Gypsies, Roma and Travellers

Diabetes in the Gypsy Roma and Traveller communities

Diabetes UK, in association with Travellers’ Times and the Rural Media company, has produced 'Don’t’ leave it too late' – an audio resource for the Gypsy Roma and Traveller communities and for healthcare professionals who work with them.

The CD was produced to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of acting early to reduce the risk of developing complications.

Knowledge of diabetes within the community is limited, due to a lack of appropriate culturally specific information.

According to results published in Department of Health’s 2004 study on the Health of Gypsies and Travellers, this community face many difficulties in accessing healthcare and have a life expectancy of about 10 years less than the general population.
