Best practice guidelines for children and young people with Type 1 diabetes

Diabetes UK, in conjunction with NHS Diabetes and the Department of Health has produced an exemplar which describes an appropriate care pathway for a child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The exemplar, written by Diabetes UK with contributions from specialist paediatric diabetes healthcare professionals plus parental representation, tells the story of Tom who is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three. The condition presents a complex set of medical, practical and emotional problems to be overcome not only by Tom himself but by his Mum and Dad, Grandma and elder sister. For his parents, after the initial shock and trauma of the diagnosis there is a massive learning curve as they grapple with needles, blood tests and a whole change in mindset and family routine. It is a life changing experience for all of them.

Each stage in Tom’s journey is linked to key themes in the Children’s NSF and is supported by relevant guidelines and research.

The exemplar will be invaluable to all involved in the care of children with diabetes including commissioners, healthcare professionals, social services and the voluntary sector. It will also be useful to parents of children with diabetes and children and young people themselves.
