Children with diabetes at school

Food and diabetes

Following a healthy balanced diet is an important part of diabetes management.

There is no special diet that needs to be followed. Anyone with diabetes should follow the same healthy, balanced diet recommended for everyone – generally one that is low in fat, salt and sugar, and includes at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

After diagnosis, the child should have been seen by a dietitian, and their parent/carer or dietitian/PDSN will be able to explain any particular needs to staff.

Diabetes UK doesn’t recommend special diabetic foods as they still affect blood glucose levels, can have a laxative effect and are expensive.
