School trips

Good news

There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the same trips away as the rest of your class. There's no need to feel left out just because of your diabetes.

Think ahead

Day trips

A day trip will have a similar routine to a day at school. Get Mum or Dad to ask your teacher what activities you will be doing on the trip, and what meals will be provided. Then Mum or Dad can tell the school staff anything else they might need to know, and maybe arrange a meeting with the staff and your nurse, if they need to.

Staying away overnight

For overnight stays, you will either need to be able to:

  • do your own injections and monitor your blood glucose levels, or ...
  • make sure that one of the staff going on your trip can do it for you.

Your Mum or Dad will need to talk to your school and your nurse about this.

Your comments

"I am 11 and have Type 1 diabetes. I went for a week to North Wales in Year 6 and my Mum and Dad had plenty of meetings with my teachers beforehand to ensure that they knew what to do whilst i was away from home, especially around trips, meal times and at bedtime. I had a great time and did not miss out on any of the activities." - Matthew
