Snacks

Snacks are often important for you to stop your blood glucose going too low.
Snacks and school
It’s completely normal for children with diabetes to need to snack in class, so ensure your teachers know about this.
You might also need to snack in exams, if you have them – and you or Mum or Dad should explain this to the teacher beforehand.
You will probably need to take some snacks with you to school, and out with you on day trips.

Snack ideas
You may want to have one of the following for a snack:
- a piece of fruit, or dried fruit
- some toast, a crumpet, bagel, pitta bread, muffin or tea cake
- a sandwich
- a plain biscuit
- a cereal bar
- individual cake bars or American muffins
- crisps (lower fat are best, like Quavers, Twiglets, Snack-a-jacks
After-school activities
Sometimes you might stay behind after school, for a band practice, or to rehearse a play (or maybe even a detention!). This may mean you will be late with an injection or evening meal.
If so, Mum or Dad will need to prepare in advance – to make sure you have a top-up snack with you. And remember to do extra blood tests!
