Hypers and DKA
Hyperglycaemia (or 'hypers')
This is when your blood glucose goes too high. It might happen if you miss your insulin, you eat too much sugary or starchy food, if you’ve over-treated a hypo or if you’re unwell with something like a nasty cold or tonsillitis.
How do hypers make you feel?
Hypers can make you feel tired, thirsty and need to wee a lot, and sometimes they give you headaches and tummy aches too.
What to do
If you’re hyper, make sure you have lots of sugar-free drinks, and your Mum or Dad might give you a bit more insulin as well. They’ll also help you do a special test for something called ketoacidosis, also known as DKA.
Ketoacidosis
Ketoacidosis is quite rare but it is serious - so if it happens you should be ready for it.
