Becky
Still horse-riding!
My full name is Rebecca, but I don't like it so most people call me Becky.
My diabetic story started when I was 4 years old. I had been going to the toilet a lot and drinking in excess of the normal, and I lost 4kg, so my mum took me to the GP, just like any other mum would.
He did a blood glucose test and I was well over the range – 29 I think. I was sent stay to the hospital, and there I stayed for two weeks, learning all the techniques and getting my glucose level back down.
Birthday hypo
Since the age of 4 I have had my bad times, and my good times as well. On my 7th birthday I had a hypo – 2.6 to be correct – and I stayed in hospital for two days. But I got to show all my presents to the nurses and doctors!
My nurse Emily is amazing! I have known her since I was first diagnosed. She’s always there for me: I can call her 24/7, and she is always so kind and helpful and makes me smile.
I thought to start with that diabetes would stop me from doing stuff, but it doesn’t. I am 15, nearly 16 now, and I play EEB Tuba and play in band on a Saturday and my condition has never even troubled me with that.
Horse riding
I horse ride but early last year my diabetes caused problems with that. I was looking for a new stable as my old one would no longer take me. I went for a trail ride, as you do, and at the end I decided I liked the stables but they did not want me. They said we cannot guarantee your safety and the safety of the horse in your care, so we left and never came back. Anyway I now ride at Hawthorn stables and really enjoy it.
Pump day
Good news! In April this year I am going to my pump start day and I can't wait! I have been to two different meetings to look at pumps but both times they said no and I never got another chance till now when I can actually see the pump being my mine and I am so excited.
I decide to tell my story after reading the other stories and knowing for the first time I was not alone. I hope mine helps!
