Daisy
Diabetes diagnosis
Hi, I'm Daisy. I'm 17 and I've had Type 1 diabetes for nearly 14 years. Some would say I'm a bit of a 'pro' when it comes to knowing how much insulin to give myself and how much of certain foods to eat, but actually I still find it difficult to balance my sugar levels.
I've come to accept the fact that there's a strong possibility that I will always have diabetes, but that doesn't mean that sometimes I don't wish it away. I think there are always struggles when it comes to managing diabetes, but it's how you cope with and overcome those difficulties which matter.
I strongly believe that diabetes doesn't have to change your life or hold you back (I still go out with my friends and have the odd alcoholic drink and I still go out for meals with my boyfriend and I'm hoping to move away from home and go to university next year). However, your blood sugar levels and keeping them balanced needs to be your main priority in order to ensure that every other part of your life runs as smoothly as it possibly can do.
If my levels are high or low, I notice that I find it hard to deal with situations which I would normally be able to handle easily, I get really tired and can't even concentrate sufficiently in lessons at school.
I didn't used to know anyone with diabetes, but when I was 12 I went on a diabetes holiday with my hospital, with other kids with diabetes, which I found a great help and also made me feel less alienated. All in all, look after your diabetes now and it doesn't have to affect you later!!
