Running for Diabetes UK

I am Sinnade - I am 14 and have had diabetes for nearly 7 years. I have had many hospital admissions over the years due to 5 and a half years of running with sugars of above 35. Over the past few years I have been getting heavier and heavier and I hadn't really been bothered until about 6 months ago when I reached that 10 stone mark.

I decided to do something about it so I looked onlne and decided to do a run for diabetes. It made me feel as though I had achieved something after raising nearly £500  for Diabetes UK within a week. I started traing and it made me lose weight, slowly but surely. In May I was also put on the pump and it has worked wonders. My sugars are levelling and I feel great about myelf.

My hba1c has come down from plus 14 to 11.7 within two months. Living with diabetes for me is mayhem, but without it what would I be now? More than likely a slob doing nothing. When I first got diabetes i was alright with it and I felt special because I had all the attention of school friends, but when months had past my heart sunk after the realisation that I won't be able to have chocolate or sweets without having an injection.

It made me depressed and I took it out on those around me. I started skipping injections to try and make my family pay attention to me and it worked, but having problems now (later in life). I know it was not worth it. I have problems with my eyes and the most worrying thing of all I have only had two periods and they came years apart from one another.

Growing up as a diabetic is not easy, so if you are caring for a child with diabetes make sure you tell them the facts and figures like the facts and figures. Let them read my story, they need to know the truth and how it can affect their lives in more than one way. Insulin is very important, it is an everyday thing and probably will be for the rest od our lives, but it keeps us alive and it lets us spend time with our family. As I have run for 5 and a half years with diabetes.

I've told you my story to give you a chance to show you diabetes does not rule your life unless you let it. We all need to keep hold of the memories we have with our families and friends as life is to short and we don't know when our time on earth will end. But diabetes will not be the cause for our end, we will be if we don't realise that diabetes can bring the better out in people and you are the controller, not it. Just make sure you live your life and you keep control of diabetes - don't ever let it control you.
