The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is an NHS organisation that provides a range of different guidance and recommendations to the NHS on high quality care.

As part of their role they produce Quality Standards. NICE has now developed a Quality Standard for Diabetes in Adults, containing 13 Quality Statements.

The Standards are aimed at patients; those planning, purchasing and monitoring services; and those delivering and providing them.

Their purpose is to define high quality care and be used to:

• inform the planning of services
• provide people with information about what care they should expect to receive
• support healthcare professionals to provide evidenced based care.
• support the assessment of existing services and how they can be improved.

The government has identified that the Standards will have a significant role in informing the planning and delivery of high quality care in England.
