There are several different ‘families’ (or types) of diabetes medication:
These families may contain more than one medication.
A word about names
Most medicines have two different names. One is the generic (or proper) name. The other is the brand (or trade) name given by the company that makes it. The important name to remember is the generic (or proper) name. If you are ever unsure about whether you have the right medication, always check with your pharmacist.
The information in this section outlines the medication currently available on prescription.
You should refer to the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL), for more detailed information on your medication(s). The PIL is produced by the manufacturer of your medication and is dispensed with your medication. You can also contact your doctor, nurse or pharmacist for further information.
