Are you Type 1 diabetes aware?

Type 1 diabetes usually develops at an early age, especially in childhood. If left untreated, it can result in serious health problems, such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which can lead to a potentially fatal coma.

Early diagnosis of the condition can prevent emergency hospitalisation. This is why, along with JDRF UK, we have produced this video to raise awareness among parents, carers, teachers and healthcare professionals and to help them become Type 1 aware by spotting the symptoms early.

If you see any of these signs in your child, or in a child you look after, go to your doctor immediately and ask for a quick, free and painless blood glucose test:

  • Increased thirst (drinking a lot)
  • Increased urination (weeing a lot)
  • Weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness.

If people know the symptoms then they are much more likely to be diagnosed quickly, reducing the chances of becoming seriously ill.

Now that you've watched our video and are Type 1 aware, please share it with your friends and family to help us reach as many people as possible. You can use the Tweet button below to make this easier.
