National Service Frameworks (NSF)
Diabetes Service Frameworks
The Department of Health and the political institutions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have developed minimum standards of diabetes care that must be met in all health regions of the UK.
This section of Diabetes UK’s website is designed to signpost useful websites and published documents to help healthcare professionals easily access the information they need both to understand the frameworks and to start to implement them.
Background
As part of the government's plans to modernise the NHS, a rolling programme of National Service Frameworks (NSF) was launched in April 1998. In January 1999, Frank Dobson, the then Secretary of State for Health, announced the diabetes service frameworks. Since then, Diabetes UK has been working closely with the governments in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure these diabetes service frameworks really do meet the needs of people with diabetes.
The aim of the frameworks is to set national minimum standards of diabetes care for the first time. The frameworks aim to improve health outcomes for people with diabetes by raising the quality of, and reducing variations between, health services. The scope of the frameworks is broad and covers prevention, identification and management of diabetes and its complications, including rehabilitation and continuing care.
The various diabetes service frameworks have now been launched in England, Scotland and Wales, and are being developed in Northern Ireland. Diabetes UK is not responsible for the content of websites or documents published externally.
