Young racing driver with Type 1 Diabetes, triumphs at the Scottish Formula Ford 1600 Championship

Craig Brunton, a 23-year-old Scottish Racing driver with Type 1 Diabetes, is the winner of the Scottish Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
Craig from Carnock, Dunfermline, sealed the championship with a final flourish to his winning season at Knockhill Racing Circuit. He put his Ray GR09 on pole position then proceeded to win both races and take fastest lap in both races.
It was a brilliant end to the year in which he has won 8 of the 13 races at Knockhill finishing every race on the Podium and his diabetes has not held him back in any way.
In order to get your race license you have to go through a series of medicals and have good control of your diabetes. Craig has to inject insulin four times a day and monitors his glucose levels regularly.
So before qualifying and before each race while most drivers are getting their focus, Craig is checking his blood glucose level and trying to balance it.
Craig was living in Edinburgh and at secondary school when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2001 at the age of 14.
His family moved to Carnock just outside Dunfermline in 2006 to be nearer work at Knockhill where the family run their business operating the Ferrari 360 driving course and Craig drives people round the track in the F1 style passenger ride car. So racing is his work and hobby.
Craig continues to keep very good control of his diabetes with a good balanced diet and exercise. Diabetes really needs good positive role models and we feel his story demonstrates just that.
