'I was diagnosed with monogenetic diabetes last week.'
I was diagnosed with monogenetic diabetes last week. I had experianced extreme tiredness for a while but with our hectic lifesytle I wasn't too concerned.
We were also trying for a baby and I concieved at the end of October 2009. As soon as I conceived I brushed my symptoms aside even though they grew worse. The week before Christmas I started to miscarry I was nine and a half weeks pregnant with non identical twins.
When I initially conceived I had some bloods taken which showed higher than normal blood suger levels. A further fasting blood test has revealed that I am diabetic, but that I have a rare hereditary form which little is known about and was once thought of as being Type 1 (my father and grandfather and great aunt all have diabetes).
Although we are saddened by our miscarriage, we are also pleased that the diabetes has been recognised before we had gone on to concieve and miscarry again which the diabetic nurse has concluded would have almost definatly happened. Also monogenetic diabetes is sensitive to tablets and I am responding well to half a tablet a day so far.
We are hopeful that my suger levels should be regulated in the next few months and we will then be able to concieve again with the guidance of the diabetic care team.
I am waiting for some blood results to come back which will locate the specific gene that I carry, we are then hoping to review my fathers treatment as he has always been told that he has Type 1 and he has been on insulin for a long while.
If we locate the gene in me we will then locate the gene in my dad and this could massively change his life. We have also been told that my HBA1C reading is now low enough to start trying to concieve again.
