'My diabetes has never stopped me racing'

I was diagnosed with Type one diabetes when I was 13-years-old. I raced motocross at that time and I found I was practically falling asleep on the start line and drinking lots, it soon became clear what the problem was.
I started on insulin injections immediately and I must admit initially I thought it was going to hold me back. I soon realised that as long as I stayed on top of my injections and kept to a good diet ,everything would be fine.
To be honest I didn’t care what it took as long as I was able to go racing and my diabetes has never stopped me doing that.
Motocross is one of the most physical sports in the world and trying to balance my energy levels was the hardest part.
It is easier now as I’m 24 and I know what my body is telling me, but back then it was a steep learning curve.
When racing, a lot of adrenalin is released into the body which puts your blood sugar up, that makes you tired and slows you down – this is what I needed to control and still do especially on a race weekend.
I have been racing motorcycles since I was five and racing with diabetes since 13, so I know what to eat and drink to make sure my energy levels are right for the race.
My racing has moved on from motocross to road racing and I’m currently contesting the Metzeler National Junior Superstock Championship which supports British Superbikes.
It is national level racing and a big step up from last year when I won the GSX-R Trophy Championship. I’ve a lot of new tracks to learn as well as a new bike and race schedule. Our class tends to race late in the day so I have to look after my diabetes very carefully on race day and test my blood sugar regularly.
My family have really helped back me up with my diabetes and my older brother Bjorn (pictured, right, with me on the grid when I raced at World Superbikes at Donington Park), ran the Manchester Great Run to raise money for Diabetes UK.
I love my racing and I can’t imagine not competing. My Type one diabetes has never stopped me achieving anything I’ve set my mind to and I’ve never let it hold me back.
