My week volunteering on a children's support holiday

Dean Puzey“When I first thought about volunteering at a Diabetes UK children’s support holiday, I couldn’t decide if it was something I’d enjoy or not.

"But the more I heard about how much the children value the trips, the more I wanted to give it a go. What I couldn’t have realised then is just how much I would get out of the experience.

"My ten-year-old sister Chloe was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was just six. She was so ill that she went into a coma and nearly died. Volunteer Dean Puzey, 18

"Ever since then I’ve tried to help people going through the same thing which is how I got involved with Diabetes UK. The support holidays help young people to manage their diabetes, whilst taking part in some brilliant activities.

“So, armed with a huge suitcase containing a contingency for every situation, off I went to Northampton for a week with a group of 11 to 15 year olds. Along with 15 other volunteers, it was my responsibility to make sure the group woke up on time, made it safely to their activities each day and to generally look out for them.

"Medical professionals and activity instructors were with us at all times so we knew we always had someone to call on if a problem came up.

“It was a fantastic week. We went canoeing, climbing and mountain biking, and had a go at archery and raft building. The group learnt so much about dealing with diabetes at their special sessions – I had no idea how much difference a week could make to them and their confidence.

“My favourite memory of the week has to be when we were raft building and some of the group ‘hilariously’ pushed me in the water!

“I definitely feel I’m more patient and tolerant now than before I went on the holiday.  Being really energetic was essential because we were always on the go and a sense of humour was a must! I would recommend the experience to anyone – volunteers and young people with diabetes all have a great time. I will definitely be helping out again next year.”
