'I get really down when I get high readings'

I have had diabetes for almost 14 years. I have had and still get hypos lots of times. My HbA1c is always over 10 or 11, I have tried numerous ways to get my levels down but my consultant says this is probably the way I will always be.

He has tried me on four injections, taken me off insulin which was a very bad expierence put me on other tablets - in the end I have always gone back to my two injections. He even offered me the chance to have a islet transplant which after reading the literature I said no.

I did start as a Type 2 but my consultant has said I am a late onset Type 1 now. I get really down when I get high readings in a morning and I  get very angry with myself. I would like to see if there are others that are the same as me.

I also have high blood pressure, glaucoma, background retinopathy and vertigo arthritis. I am an active person, eat healthily except for eating cake or chocolate after evening meal. I see my diabetic consultant every six months, have yearly checkups with a nurse at the health centre. I also have the flu jab, scanning of eyes annually plus eye test.

My diet consists of low fat reduced sugar, semi-skimmed milk, olive cooking oil, seeded bread and flora light spread. I have potato meals with two to three veg and meat, pasta and rice meals with no sauces, but include salad or fish. I never fry anything.

I make myself cakes with half amount or no sugar to what recipe says and I eat cake or chocolate about three times a week.

I do leg exercises on stepper, upper body on bedroom wall (like press ups), do a lot of dancing in kitchen to music on radio, housework, gardening, walking. I always seem to be doing something. My weight was around 7 stone  2 to 7 stone 12 since I have been eating more cake over the last couple of years. Now I have gone to 8 stone 2 to 8 stone 5 which I feel a lot happier with.
