Children and Young People’s Events

Children and Young People’s Events

Diabetes UK Children and Young People’s Events are packed with fun activities and adventure. They offer a unique opportunity to be among people who understand what life is like with diabetes. For many, it is the first step to managing their own diabetes.

Developing a positive attitude and establishing self-confidence in the management of diabetes is a key objective of the events.

Although Diabetes UK caters for a large age range, there are three main age groups (7-11, 11-15 and 16-18 year olds). During the events, children and young people are put into smaller age groups with others of a similar age. Each event will have a specific programme catered for their age group.

We check all our venues and ensure that, where appropriate, each centre is accredited by the nationally recognised authority (AALA) and are also approved by Diabetes UK.

All event sites have qualified staff and instructors who are very aware of the needs of children/teenagers with diabetes. Meals are planned to meet the variety of needs of everyone and the programme schedule is planned to develop a better understanding of managing diabetes whilst having fun.

All volunteers delivering our events receive full training, provide written references and undergo criminal records checks. All events have strict child to volunteer ratios and include a team of healthcare professionals to ensure we have a high standard of care for all children attending.

Doctors, nurses and dietitians provide daily supervision of diabetes management. Many of the staff have diabetes themselves and attended Diabetes UK events during their own childhood. They serve as role models for a healthy and happy life.

The Children and Young People’s Events take place across the UK - see below for dates and locations. If you have any queries, please call 020 7424 1000 and ask for the Care Events team, or email careevents@diabetes.org.uk
