Egypt - current situation

As you will be aware there has been an escalation of violence in Egypt in recent days and weeks and this is a situation we are closely monitoring. As far as advice from the FCO is concerned, there is general advice against all but essential travel to most parts of the country, including Cairo. However, this does not include the main tourist resorts where we have most of our medical cases and where most policy holders travel to in Egypt.

It’s important to note that you must not travel against the Foreign Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) advice as policyholders will not be covered for the trip at all in this situation.

Please refer to your own specific policy wording to see what is covered in terms of cancellation, abandonment, travel delay and any travel disruption upgrades where applicable. Most policies do not cover civil unrest and nor do any travel disruption upgrades that we underwrite therefore each traveller needs to check their policies for exclusions relating to civil unrest.

We will allow for insurance to be transferred to new dates if anybody can no longer travel due to the FCO advice. The trip must have been booked before the FCO advice became publicly available.

Please note that if you change travel dates with your holiday provider because of the FCO advice against travel to this destination, then you can change your insurance dates to fit the new trip dates to within 3 months of the alteration date. By doing this you forfeit any claim relating to the original trip you could not take.

We will keep you updated with any developments on the current situation.

The dangers of travelling without proper cover

Most standard travel policies will have a pre-existing medical conditions exclusion. If you travel with a medical condition and then had to make a claim then any medical costs relating directly or indirectly to that medical condition would be excluded. This means treatment for your condition and any complications will not be covered.

Insurers require disclosure of pre-existing medical conditions of all members of the travelling party, even if not covered under the same policy e.g. a husband and wife. Failure to do so may lead to a claim being rejected. This is why Diabetes UK Insurance Services always suggests that all members of the travelling party are insured on a travel policy covering pre-existing medical conditions.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

If you use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to reduce the cost of any medical treatment, then the £50 excess for each and every claim for Medical and Emergency Expenses will not apply.

Please note that the EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. The EHIC allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland. There are conditions and restrictions as to what is covered and the EHIC does not provide any cover for repatriation.

Full details of the cover provided by the EHIC can be found on the EHIC website. This also provides a link giving you details of the conditions and restrictions in each country.
