Diabetes in Scotland

The Scottish Diabetes Framework has been updated in a new three-year Action Plan, which sets out nine aims to be achieved by 2009:

  • Improve the quality of care and outcomes for all people with diabetes and reduce inequalities.
  • Ensure that all people with diabetes have access to effective retinopathy screening.
  • Support self care through information and education.
  • Strengthen and develop Diabetes Managed Clinical Networks.
  • Improve patient data.
  • Improve education of healthcare professionals.
  • Increase diabetes research in Scotland.
  • Promote healthier lifestyles for people with diabetes and the population as a whole.
  • Improve monitoring and communication of diabetes services.

Diabetes UK Scotland has welcomed the plan and, in particular, its promise of fulfilling nine key promises, including better psychological support and a greater focus on education for people with diabetes.
