Arctic Kites Expedition

*Chris Sunderland and Rachel Owen will be undertaking a self sufficient crossing of the Greenland Icecap next spring raising money for Diabetes UK. Using a combination of skis and kites, when wind conditions allow, Rachel and Chris will make their journey hauling pulks weighing around 100kg. The 640 km expedition will take five weeks and they will encounter arctic storms, crevasses, polar bears and temperatures down to -40 C.

The Big Tri

Silhouettes of a cyclist, runner and swimmer on an orange and yellow sunburst background2007 saw the launch of Diabetes UK's first gym-based triathlon event - rowing, cycling and running - the Diabetes UK Big Tri. What better way to continue your new year’s resolutions but to get healthy and row, cycle and run your way to peak fitness?

If you would like to know how to organise a 'Diabetes UK Big Tri' at a gym near you, please contact Penny January for further information. Telephone 01372 720148 or email penny.january@diabetes.org.uk.

BUPA Great South Run 2007

*A total of 120 runners helped raise vital funds for Diabetes UK at the Porstmouth BUPA Great South Run on 28 October 2007.

All charities have to pre-purchase guaranteed race places.  Diabetes UK needs to fill these pre-purchased places to offset these and other costs for entering our team in the race.  We ask our runners to raise £250 in sponsorship (many raise much more) so that we can maximise our fundraising income.  Please register with one of Diabetes UK's guaranteed places for 2008.  Contact  penny.january@diabetes.org.uk for more details.

If you register directly with the race organisers and would like to raise money for Diabetes UK, please contact us - we offer support such as running vests, sponsorship forms and fundraising tips to all our runners.

Walk in the Park

Walk in the Park is a fun way to raise vital funds for Diabetes UK research projects.  Walks do not have to take place in a park – a riverside, canal path, woodland, promenade or beach walk can all be part of the fundraising effort.

Eight new walks took place in the South East region in 2007, raising  £14,500 for Diabetes UK research projects.
