Top testing tips

  • Make sure your child’s hands – and yours – are clean before you begin. Use water rather than baby wipes (they contain glycerine that could alter the result).
  • Avoid pricking the thumb or index finger – and try to use a different finger and a different part of it each time.
  • Don’t prick the middle of a finger, or too close to a nail – this will really hurt.
  • Asking your child to hold their hand down towards the ground should make more blood flow to the fingers.
  • Make sure your child’s hands are warm – if your child’s hands are really cold it’s hard to draw blood, and finger-pricking will hurt more.
  • Ask your paediatric diabetes team what blood glucose targets your child should be aiming for and what you should do about high/low results.
  • Make sure you know how to quality check your child’s blood glucose meter and how often you should do this.
