
If you can provide a healthy diet at home most of the time in the right proportions, you can help your child achieve a healthy weight for their height. Being too heavy for height can make diabetes more difficult to control, as insulin may not work as well. The ‘Eatwell plate’ (figure above) represents the proportions of the food groups in a balanced diet. Foods from each of these should be eaten to provide all the nutrients needed for good health – no single food group can provide everything we need to stay healthy.
