People with diabetes can still drive, but there are a few things your teen needs to be aware of when applying for a licence:
- They must tell the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) or DVA (in Northern Ireland) they have diabetes when applying for a provisional licence for a moped, motorbike or car. If their diabetes is well controlled and their doctor, if asked, confirms this there’s no reason why they shouldn’t get a licence.
- People who use insulin usually get a licence which is restricted to one, two or three years, rather than one that lasts until they are 70. But renewals of restricted licences are free.
- Your teen must inform their insurance company that they have diabetes otherwise their cover may be invalid. Diabetes UK Insurance Services has products for people with diabetes.
