Childcare

Sharing the responsibility

No matter how much you want to protect and care for your child, it’s impossible to do so 24 hours a day. Sometimes you will have to rely on others to look after them.

You might need a carer for a variety of reasons – perhaps you need a regular childminder while you’re at work, or maybe you just fancy an evening out. Nobody knows your child better than you, and learning to trust others to care for them can be difficult. But there are two problems that could arise from refusing to allow anyone else to look after your child:

  • You run the risk of your child becoming too dependant, making it difficult when they need to take responsibility for their diabetes.
  • You will be neglecting your own needs. Caring for any child is tiring enough, but when they have diabetes it can be doubly exhausting. By giving yourself a break, even if it’s only the odd hour here and there, you’ll be in a fitter state both emotionally and physically to look after them when they are in your care.
