At work

If you’ve just left school or college and you’re going into the world of work for the first time, you will need to think about how your diabetes is going to fit into your new working life.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • When and where you’re going to do your injection and blood tests.
  • When is your lunch break? Is it at the same time each day or might it vary? And if it does vary, is this going to have any effect on your diabetes?
  • What are you going to have with you to treat a hypo?
  • Consider whether you’re going to bring your own lunch in or buy something at work.
  • If you’re going to need snacks during the day, when you’re going to have them and what’s an easy snack to have at work.
  • If you’re doing shifts, will your diabetes management need to change? Do you need to talk to your healthcare team about what to do?
  • How open are you going to be about your diabetes? It’s certainly worth telling your close colleagues in case you need to stop work suddenly to treat a hypo.
  • Make sure you know your employers policy on having time off for hospital appointments.
