Aims: This postgraduate programme in diabetes is an innovative multi-professional masters level qualification which has been jointly developed by clinical educationalists within our clinical partners – the St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London department of Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine.

This group is dedicated to meeting the learning needs of those providing clinical services to patients with diabetes in the community and in hospital.

Subjects covered in the postgraduate certificate include:
Understanding Diabetes: Principles of Care
Understanding Diabetes: Exploring Clinical Cases
Managing the Complications Associated with Diabetes
Managing Diabetes in Primary & Secondary Care

Venue:   The programme can be studied by distance learning or through on-site attendance.

The postgraduate certificate is taught across four four-day blocks at both Roehampton University and at the Postgraduate Medical Centre at the Royal London department of Diabetes and Metabolic medicine.

Dates: for 2008/09 entry have not yet been confirmed.

The postgraduate diploma and masters is taught one day a week across the academic year.
Length: The programme is a part-time programme that can be studied either on-site or by distance learning (see above).

The full masters takes three years to complete:
PGCert  - year one
PGDip - year two
MSc - year three

Costs: £4,600 £9,000
Home/EU students:
PGCert: £1,533.33
PGDip/MSc: £1,533.33 each (price subject to inflation increase as will be studied after 2008)

International students
PGCert: £3,000
PGDip/MSc: £3,000 each (price subject to inflation increase as will be studied after 2008)

Entry criteria: All candidates for entry must hold a post where they can show that they have principal responsibility for the care of people with diabetes.

All the programmes will be delivered and assessed in English. For non-native speakers of English, IELTS 7.0 or equivalent is required.

All applicants will be interviewed either face-to-face, or over the telephone in the case of overseas applicants or those wishing to follow the programme in distance learning mode.

Credit exemption may be given for approved prior learning.

Applicants without a first-degree qualification will require evidence of registration to practise as a health professional such as nursing etc. Nurses should be qualified to RGN/SRN level and additionally possess at least 60 (level 2 credits minimum) from post-registration study.
OR:
An Honours degree in a:

social science
psychology
biological/ natural sciences subject
or equivalent area.

Qualified professionals such as podiatrists, pharmacists and dieticians are eligible for entry.
OR:
A recognised medical qualification (e.g. MB, BCh) with at least two years post-registration experience.

Distance Learning
Distance Learning mode students must also provide evidence of access to a suitable academic library which can support their basic literature needs for following the programme, have access to e-mail and Internet and have access to a computer system of sufficient level to run statistical analysis software for the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc stages.

How achievement is assessed:   Each course has its own assessment method, which may be:
an essay
a practical report
workshop exercise
seminar presentation (video presentation for distance learning mode)
written examination.
In additional MSc students additionally write a dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words.
In distance learning mode extensive course materials are provided.
Teaching methods: Besides a traditional series of lectures from those eminent in the field of diabetes care, communication and practical skills are refined throughout the course. Opportunities to develop critical appraisal and presentation skills are also provided through large and small group work.

All clinical members of the teaching team are actively engaged within the National Health Service, either in hospitals or in the community.

The diabetes programmes are available on a part-time attendance basis as well as by distance learning. All educational material is designed within a modular framework. Core materials are common to both face to face and distance learning formats. Students may elect to mix both modes of study within their individual programmes.
