Module Aims

The module is designed to introduce the principles of safe and effective medicines management within clinical practice. To acquire knowledge and understanding of pharmacology and its application in the student’s specific area of practice, with an appreciation of both the evidence base and the legal and professional frameworks within which they operate.

Synopsis

The module offers the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge and understanding of the principles of evidence-based medicines management.

The course will build on previous knowledge and understanding of pharmacology, allowing development within the student’s area of practice. Ethical principles, professional accountability, cost effectiveness and person-centred care will be integral within this module, in order to facilitate the student’s development, knowledge and skill in safe medicines management.

Length structure and Venue location

The module will be delivered over the Spring 2012 academic term on campus in York.

Venue dates

The course will start in April 2012 with full day attendance on 19th April, 3rd May, 17th May, 31st May, 14th June, and 28th June.

Cost to student

Places are offered at no charge to NHS Trust and primary care staff in areas covered by the Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA).

Places are available by agreement with the SHA to South Tees and Tees Esk and Wear Valley staff; please contact The University of York for more details.

Funding is also available to professionals working in the ambulance service, prison service and hospices.

Applicants must get approval from the appropriate manager in their organisation to access SHA funded places.

If applicants do not fall into any of the above categories, then the module cost is £525.

Entry criteria

The module is suitable for any professional who works with patients/clients taking medicines, whether they are prescribed or non-prescribed, eg dietitians, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and operating department practitioners.

It is also suitable for those who work in learning disability and mental health areas.

Achievement assessed

Assessment is in the form of a 3,000 word written assignment, consisting of two parts. A pass in both is required.

Teaching methods

Teaching will include lectures and seminars. Students will be expected to access pre course material via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in order to prepare for this programme.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. Apply pharmacological principles to the medicines prescribed, supplied, and/or administered in practice.
  2. Discuss the current legal and professional frameworks for accountability and
    responsibility in medicines management.
  3. Review risk assessment and risk management strategies for safe practice in the supply and/or administration of medicines.
  4. Examine the broader influences on medicines management, including roles and relationships to others involved in prescribing, supplying and administering medicines.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and application of the principles of compliance, concordance and adherence in medicines management.
  6. Evaluate their skills in patient assessment and the monitoring of response to
    therapies, including referral of the patient where appropriate.
  7. Identify sources of evidence-based information and guidance and explain how
    these can be used to underpin best practice in medicines management.
