Involving children and young people in designing diabetes services (Oct 2007)

Involving children, young people and their carers in service design is crucial to the development of responsive diabetes services. This is supported by the recent policy emphasis on Patient and Public Involvement which is promoted by the NHS Centre for Involvement.

Children and young people will be motivated by a range of reasons to become involved, including, feeling respected, wanting a positive experience or the chance to take part in something that will help them or is fun.

Diabetes UK conducted a small scale project recording examples of where children and young people have been consulted by their diabetes service about the service they receive.

Diabetes UK has drawn together these examples with useful information about the “why” and “how to” of involving children and young people. This document is not intended as a replacement for the resources.
