This report looks at what choice means to people with diabetes and what information these people need to effectively make their choices.
Patient choice in England and Wales has become the new ideology to promote health policy in the political arena. As a result, it is important that Diabetes UK engages with this agenda to influence it to the advantage of people with diabetes. The patient choice agenda in health currently focuses on issues that may not be of primary importance to people with diabetes. We need to try and steer this agenda on to issues that affect people with diabetes and lobby to get their voices heard, which will help them to have better control over their own health. In order to do this, we need to find out exactly what choices people with diabetes want to make to be able to self manage their condition effectively and what information people with diabetes need to make these choices. This will enable us to produce an informed position statement for the charity, which will in turn provide lobbying information to further these aims.
