Maslaha

Summary:

In 2008 Maslaha successfully produced a health resource in partnership with Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust to address the high prevalence of diabetes within the Muslim community. Maslaha has developed a unique product to enable healthcare providers to provide a better service to the Muslim community by gaining a greater understanding of Islam and its practice, and using this knowledge to encourage patients to better manage illness and lead a healthier lifestyle.

Khush Dil (Happy Heart) Project - Aug 08

Summary:

The service consists of a weekly exercise group for Asian women and fortnightly clinics for people with diabetes from BME communities at an inner city surgery. Both of the services are demonstrating good results.

Somali Storybook Diabetes Education Project April 2008

Summary:

In order to improve the understanding of diabetes amongst Somali people in South Wales, a number of education sessions have been held using a storybook in Somali and English.

Apnee Sehat (Our Health)<br>May 2006

Summary: A series of resources and activities were developed by a group of stakeholders including the PCT, community members, and other relevant organisations, to raise awareness of the risks of diabetes within the South Asian Communities and look at behaviour and lifestyle change.
The resources include a DVD and health calendar and activities included a health fair and work with the cooks at the local Gurdwara to create healthier alternatives within dishes cooked.
The Apnee Sehat project was evaluated by the Institute of Health, University of Warwick

Coping with Diabetes Project Hackney<br>February 2006

Summary:

Residential care


This project provides a range of services including, diabetes awareness sessions delivered in several different languages and Expert Patient programme sessions in English. The team attend a variety of community settings and activities.

The programme has two Turkish Speaking Lay Educators one of whom has been trained to deliver the Expert patient programme.

A range of sustainable resources have been developed including an audio CD of an Introduction to Type 2 Diabetes in Turkish which is also available in Sylhetti. A DVD will soon be available in Turkish looking at different aspects of diabetes education and care.

Sessions have also been run at a secure forensic home for people with severe mental health difficulties, looking at areas such as food choices available and physical activity

Toolkit to Support the Running of Diabetes Awareness Events for the South Asian Communities May 2006

Summary: This toolkit aims to meet the need of raising awareness of diabetes in the South Asian communities. It comprises two Powerpoint presentations and an accompanying handbook. The toolkit provides culturally appropriate information to support community leaders, religious leaders and healthcare professionals to organise an awareness raising event.
The presentations are 'Living with Type 2 diabetes' and 'Diet and diabetes.'
